Where the Heights is, and how far we come

The City of Houston counts the Greater Heights as Super Neighborhood 15: bounded by I-10 on the south, Loop 610 on the north, I-45 on the east and White Oak Bayou on the west, in ZIP codes 77007, 77008 and 77009 (City of Houston, Super Neighborhood 15). That is five to six miles from downtown, deep inside our free delivery zone.

What a move in the Heights looks like

The Heights is mostly houses: bungalows, garage apartments and three-story townhomes on narrow lots, with a growing number of mid-rise apartments along the edges. For a move that usually means a driveway or street parking in front of the house and a short carry, often up a townhome's stairs. Bins on a dolly handle the flat part; for a walk-up with no elevator, stairs are $10 per flight, charged once per address.

Parking, streets and rules to know

Several parts of the neighborhood are City of Houston historic districts, including Houston Heights East, West and South, Norhill, Woodland Heights, Freeland and Germantown (City planning list). That governs what owners can change on a building, not how you move in, but it is why so many streets are narrow, tree-lined and short on parking. Tell your movers the truck may have to park on the street.

The Houston Heights Association, founded in 1973, looks after the Heights Fire Station, Marmion Park and Donovan Park (Houston Heights Association). Norhill, Woodland Heights and Sunset Heights have civic associations of their own, and the super neighborhood council meets quarterly at the Fire Station at 107 W. 12th Street.

Cardboard after a move here

Houses here get City curbside service, so cardboard goes in the green cart only if it is flattened to three feet or less on every side. The City's Reuse Warehouse at 9003 N. Main (77022), a short drive north, is open Tuesday to Saturday, 8 to 5 (City of Houston recycling centers).
